HERNANDO – New activities are stirring at the Hernando Civic Center to benefit regular park users and community visitors, thanks to a donation from Maddox Foundation.
Children from all over the county who participate in the Jr. StreetKings youth roller hockey league now have a place to suit up, hang additional gear, and rest while practicing or competing, thanks to new dugout areas with benches, fans and hooks.
A new office featuring a rollerblade rental center anchors the dugouts. This summer, the Jr. StreetKings league will feature “open skate” times. The arena and skate rental will be open to the community, including families visiting the ballparks, soccer fields and Saddle Club.
“We hope to have the skate rental center completed by June 1, ” said Hernando Civic Center facilities manager Danny Phillips.
Phillips is also overseeing the installation of another Maddox Foundation-sponsored addition to the Civic Center – windscreens with yellow fence caps for all the baseball and softball fields at the community facility.
“Maddox Foundation has really stepped up and spearheaded improvements to the facility over the past six years,” Phillips said. “Without the Foundation's continued support to the hockey and baseball programs, we would not have the level of facility we enjoy here. We really appreciate the Foundation's commitment to the youth programs here.”
